How to…Make a “Custom Stencil”
투명 필름지 등에 도안을 그리고 모양대로 오려낸 후, 종이나 벽, 가구 등 원하는 곳에 필름을 붙인 후 오려낸 자리에 물감을 두드려 발라서 도안과 같은 그림을 만든다. 이것을 스텐실 기법이라고 부른다.
일단 도안만 있으면 초보자라도 쉽게 채색할 수 있으므로 인테리어에도 많이 사용한다. 도안 하나로 많은 그림을 찍어낼 수 있다는 점은 판화와 흡사하나 판화는 좌우반전이 된다는 점과 스텐실은 좌우반전이 없다는 점이 다르고, 스텐실은 판화와 달리 채색도구의 선택의 폭이 넓다.
트레이스 앱에는 이 스텐실 개념을 그대로 앱 속으로 가져왔다. 트레이스에서 스텐실 기능을 사용하는 것은 매우 간단하다. 별도의 설명이 필요 없을 정도이다.

어떤 앱이든 같은 기능을 가지고서도 어떻게 그 기능을 확장하고 사용자화 하느냐에 따라 앱의 가치가 달라진다. 물론 트레이스는 많은 유저들을 통해 공유되는 시스템으로 훌륭하고 뛰어난 스텐실 소스를 제공 할 수 있게 하였다. 덕분에 필요한 소스를 찾아 다운로드 받아 적용만 하면 웬만한 작업은 할 수 있다. 하지만 좀더 크리에이티브 한 전문가 들은 이 단계에서 목마름을 느낀다. 자신만의 유니크한 작품을 만들고 싶기 때문이다. 이제 물고기를 잡는 법을 배워야 할 순간이다.
나만의 스텐실을 만들기 위해서 아래 워크플로우를 따라가 보자.
어렵지 않다.
1. The “+”Button
Tap the stencil settings icon and then “+” to create your very own custom stencil. Not seeing this button? Assure you have the latest update here.
2. Make
Select any photo, drawing, image or sketch. Adjust the contrast to a desired appearance or invert as needed. NOTE: All of your custom stencils will be saved in your “my stencils” folder. To delete a stencil simply pull the stencils down.
3. Sketch
Use any pen style from pencil to charcoal along with any color and opacity to create beautiful and original stencil drawings. Want to get additionally creative? Use the stencil tool bar to invert, mirror, lock, flip or auto fill your stencil as you sketch.
4. Have Fun
Add fill, color, texture and character to all of your drawings. Want a few stencil ideas? Your fellow Trace users have made unit layouts for site plans, façade textures for elevations, graphics for diagraming, logos for branding and entourage for all types of renderings. How creative can you get?
