초원의 빛

Splendor in the Grass

 

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.

한때 그렇게 찬란했던 빛이
이제 눈앞에서 영원히 사라졌다 한들
초원의 빛이여, 꽃의 영광 어린 시간이여,
아무것도 다시 되돌릴 수 없다 한들 어떠리.
지금까지 있었고 앞으로도 영원히 있을
원초적인 연민으로
인간의 고통에서 벗어나
생기를 찾아 마음을 다스리며
죽음을 초월한 신앙의 힘으로
지혜로운 영혼을 가져다주는 세월 속에서
우리는 절대 슬퍼하지 않으며
그 속에 깊이 남겨진 오묘한 빛의 힘을 알게 되리라.
